The Italian Data Protection Authority Stops Cookies without User’s Consent.

Stop to the installation of internet cookies without previously informing users and obtaining their consent. Internet users can decide whether the information collected on the sites they visited to receive targeted advertising can be used to target their profile.

This was established by the Data Protection Commissioner which identified ways to make it simpler for users to online information about the use of cookies and gave directions to obtain consent when required by law.

Cookies are small text files that websites visited sent to the terminal (computers, tablets, smartphones, notebooks) of the user, where they are stored and passed on to the same sites for a future visit. They are used to perform computer authentication, session tracking and storing information about the sites. But cookies can also track shipping, collect data on tastes, habits, personal choices that allow the reconstruction of detailed consumer profiles.

"With this measure it becomes easier to comply with the obligations set forth by European legislation," - said Antonello Soro, president of the Data Protection Commissioner. "The simplified procedure will allow surfers to easily manifest a truly free and informed consent."
